What is Tatami? 畳って何だろう？

Tatami are traditional flooring mats used in a Japanese room. They consist of a tightly-woven rice straw base and a woven rush cover. Tatami come in rectangular standard size, so the size of a Japanese room is often indicated by the number of tatami mats placed on the floor.

畳は、和室で用いられる伝統的な床材用の敷物です。固く編まれた藁でできた畳床とイグサを編んで作られた畳表からなっています。畳は、長方形で大きさが決まっているため、和室の広さは、床に敷かれた畳の数でしばしば示されます。

How do you compare a tatami floor with a carpeted floor ? 畳敷きとカーペット床を比べると？

A carpeted floor is warmer in winter, while a tatami floor is cooler in summer. A tatami floor helps adjust the humidity in the room by absorbing moisture, so a tatami floor may be more suitable to the Japanese climate. Unfortunately, there are fewer houses having a tatami room these days.

カーペット床の方が冬は暖かいけれど、畳敷きの方が夏は涼しいです。また、畳は湿気を吸収することで、部屋の湿度を調整する役目を果たします。畳敷きの方が日本の気候に向いていると言えます。残念ながら最近では畳部屋のある家は少なくなってきています。

Why do the Japanese take off their shoes before entering the inside of the house ? 日本人は家の中に入る前にどうして靴を脱ぐの？

Japanese residences are traditionally designed for people to sit directly on the floor. Floor cushions, tatami flooring and wooden floored corridors are all designed for that purpose. In order to keep the floor clean, they take off their shoes inside the house. Also, Japanese tend to consider the inside sacred and the outside worldly, and this is true of residences. Taking off shoes at the entrance is a symbolic act of paying respect to the sacred inside area.

日本の住宅は伝統的に、人が床に直接座れるように設計されています。座布団や畳敷きや板張りの廊下も、全てその目的で設計されています。床を綺麗に保つために、日本人は家の中では靴ｗ脱ぎます。また日本人は、内部を神聖、外部を世俗的と考える傾向があり、この考え方は住宅にも当てはまります。入り口で靴を脱ぐのは、神聖な内部空間に対して敬意を払う象徴的な行いであると言えます。

Why do many Japanese prefer rooms facing south ? 日本人はどうして南向きの部屋を好むの？

Japanese houses are designed to have good ventilation with hot and humid summers in mind. Such a design is is not suitable for central heating, and the rooms facing north get extremely cold during winter. The rooms facing south let in a lot of sunlight during winter, which keep s them warm, while they let in less direct sunlight during summer due to Japan`s latitude, which is lower than that of most European countries. Thus, the rooms facing south are very comfortable throughout the year.

日本の家は、暑くて湿度が高い夏を念頭に置いて、通気が良いように設計されています。そのような設計だと、セントラルヒーティングには向いていないから、冬には北向きの部屋がとても寒くなります。南向きの部屋は、冬にたっぷり日差しが入って暖かい一方で、ヨーロッパのほとんどの国より日本は低緯度に位置しているので、夏には直射日光が入ってきません。つまり、南向きの部屋は、一年を通して快適ということになります。
