The Kiyomizu-dera is said to be the most visited tourist site in all Kyoto. This is the most popular of all the temples in Kyoto. We pass through the nio-mon(Dave gate, a temple gate guarded by fierce deities) and the vivid red colored three-storied pagoda towers before us.

清水寺は京都で最も多くの観光客が訪れると言われています。京都では最も人気の高い寺です。仁王門をくぐると、正面に朱色が鮮やかな三重塔がそびえています。

Kiyomizu no butai 清水の舞台

The most popular spot in the temple precincts is the Kiyomizu no butai(Kiyomizu platform) made of Japanese zelkova pillars and Japanese cypress boards. The platform projecting out from the cliff is 12 meters in height. It offers a splendid view over the city streets of Kyoto.

境内で一番の人気スポットは、欅（けやき）の柱と檜（ひのき）の板を組み合んで造った「清水の舞台」です。崖から張り出した高さ12メートルの舞台で、京都市外を広く見渡せる絶景は見事です。

Otowa no taki waterfall & Jisyu Jinja 音羽の滝＆地主神社

There are a rich variety of other things to see. The Otowa no taki waterfall is where the name of the temple (Kiyomizu means pure water) comes from. Drinking its water is said to bring longevity.

他にも清水寺の名前のゆかりとなった、飲むと長寿に効くと言われる「音羽の滝」、縁結びに御利益があり恋占いの石がある「地主神社」など、見どころ豊富です。

Sakanoue no Tamuramaro 坂上田村麻呂

The Otowa no taki waterfall was discovered in the year 778 by the monk Enchin, who later worshipped a thousand armed Avalokitesvara statue above it. Later, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro enshrined an eleven-headed Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara as a main object of worship. This is said to have been the beginning of the Kiyomizu-dera.

音羽の滝は778(宝亀9)年に延鎮上人が尋ねあてたもので、この上に千手観音像をまつり、後に坂上田村麻呂が十一面千手観音像を本尊として安置したのが、清水寺の始まりと言われています。
