The three-storied pavilion of shining gold 黄金に輝く三層の楼閣

Kinkaku-ji was originally a villa constructed by the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. After his death the residence was converted into a Zen temple known as Rokuon-ji.

金閣寺は、室町幕府三代将軍足利義満が建てた別荘が始まりで、彼の没後に鹿苑寺という禅寺に改められました。

Golden Pavilion 金閣

The Kyoko-chi pond is surrounded by a garden in the chisen-kaiyu-style. The glittering gold colored Kinkaku Golden Pavilion stands on its north side. The three storied bone(sarira) reliquary(Shari-den) is dedicated to bone relics of the Buddha Shakyamuni. The first level is constructed in the shin-den style, the second in the buke style, and third in the Zen-sect Buddhist architectural style. The second and third levels have been covered in gold leaf.

鏡湖池を中心に池泉回遊式庭園が広がり、北側には金色に輝く金閣が建っています。お釈迦様の遺骨を祀った三層の舎利殿で、一層目は寝殿造り、二層目は武家造り、三層目は禅宗仏殿造りとなっています。二層目と三層目には金箔が貼られています。

Sekka-tei 夕佳亭

Kinkaku-ji was to become the theme of Mishima Yukio`s novel The Golden Pavilion. Following the destruction of pavilion by arson in 1950, it was rebuilt n 1955.The sukiya style teahouse called Sekka-tei which stands on the mountain to the rear of the temple offers an interesting vantage point from which to view Kinkaku-ji.

1950（昭和25）年に放火で焼失した後、1955（昭和30）年に復元され、三島由紀夫の小説「金閣寺」の題材になりました。裏山にある数寄屋造りの茶室、夕佳亭からの眺めも趣があります。
