A Shrine with ties to the Heian Capital Heian-Kyo 京の都・平安京ゆかりの神社

This shrine was built in 1895, the eleven hundredth year after the capital was transferred to Heian-kyo. It is modelled on the Chodo-in, which was the state chamber of the Imperial Court at Heian-kyo.

平安神宮は、平安京に都が移された年から1100年目の1895(明治28)年に造られた神宮で、平安京の正庁だった朝堂院を模しています。

Daigoku-den 大極殿

Passing through the Otenmon and entering the precincts, we see in front of us the Daigoku-den, a worship hall standing to the fore of the main hall. Standing symmetrically on either side of the Daigoku-den are the belvederes Byakko-ro and Soryu-ro; these buildings are joined by corridors.

応天門をくぐって境内に入ると、正面には拝殿である大極殿があります。その両側には、白虎楼と蒼龍楼の左右対称の建物が回廊で結ばれています。

The Shinen Shrine Gardens 神苑庭園

The Shinen shrine gardens are divided into four sections. The Minami shinen (South Shrine Garden) dates to the Heian period. The Nishi shinen (West Shrine Garden) centers on the Byakko-ike pond, and has beautiful irises in early summer. In the Naka shinen gardens, the Soryu-ike pond contains a steppingstone bridge, Garyu bashi bridge. The Higashi shinen garden surrounds the Seiho-ike pond. In these four gardens, we can enjoy the characteristic elegance and charms of each of the four seasons.

庭園である神苑は四つに分かれています。南神苑は平安時代の庭園です。西神苑は白虎池を中心とした初夏に花菖蒲が美しい庭園です。中神苑は蒼龍池の中に飛び石の臥龍橋がある庭園です。東神苑は栖鳳池を囲む庭園です。これらの四つの庭園では四季折々の風情が楽しめます。
