Ho-nen 法然

Chion-in is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism. It was built as a base for the propagation of the sect`s teachings by its founder, Honen.

知恩院は浄土宗の総本山で、開祖である法然上人が布教の拠点として創建しました。

San-mon Gate 三門

Its San-mon gate is, at around 24 meters in height, among the world`s largest wooden gates. There is also the Miei-do, where prayers are dedicated to the image of Honen, the O-hojo (Large Guest House) and Ko-hojo (Small Guest House) ten foot square hut residential chambers in the shoin architectural style and many other buildings which are National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties in these spacious temple precincts.

高さ約２４メートルの三門は、世界最大級の木造の門です。その他には、法然上人の御影を祀る御影堂、書院である大小二つの方丈など、広大な境内には国宝や重要文化財の建物が多数並んでいます。

The Wasuregasa is the Forgotten Umbrella in the eaves at the rear of the Miei-do, said to have been left there by the famous master-craftsman Hidari Jingoro. This, along with the Uguisbari no Roka(Japanese nightingale board corridor) the boards of which make a sound of the chirp of the Japanese nightingale when you walk on them, are among the Seven Wonders of Chion-in.

名工だった左甚五郎が、御影堂の軒の裏側に置いたとされる「忘れ傘」、歩くとウグイスの鳴き声に似た音が鳴る「鶯張りの廊下」など「七不思議」としても知られています。

Hojo-teien & Yuzen-en 　方丈庭園と友禅苑

The Chisen-kaiyu style pond-centered Hojo-teien garden takes the Higashiyama Mountains as its borrowed scenery and draws its water from a Higashiyama spring. It is one of two famous gardens that are outstanding features of this temple. The other is the karesansui style dry landscape garden Yuzen-en.

方丈庭園は東山を借景とし、東山の湧水を引いた池泉回遊式庭園です。また枯山水庭園の友禅苑とあわせた二つの名園は見ものです。
