Toji(Kyoo Gokokuji) 東寺(教王護国寺)
The Symbol of the temple 東寺のシンボル
Toji, built by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), is the head of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. Its five storied-pagoda, the symbol of the temple, is at around 56 meters in height the tallest in Japan. Having been lost four times to fire, the present tower is that built by Tokugawa Iemitsu during the Edo period.
東寺は弘法大師(空海)が建てた真言宗の総本山です。シンボルである五重塔は高さ56メートルで国内最大。４度の火災に遭い、現在の塔は徳川家光により江戸時代に建てられたものです。
The Golden Hall /The Lecture Hall/The Refectory 金堂・講堂・食堂
Passing through the Nandai-mon gate, designated an Important Culture Property, we enter the temple precincts and see its buildings stretching back in a straight line north-ward, first the Kon-do(Golden Hall), then the Lecture Hall and the Refectory. These To-ji precincts preserve the exact form and scale of the time of their original construction at the beginning of the Heian period.
重要文化財に指定されている南大門をくぐり、境内に入ると一直線に並んでいる伽藍が目に入ります。北に向かって金堂、講堂、食堂の順で平安時代初めの創建当時のそのままの様式と規模を伝えています。
The Kon-do(Golden Hall) 金堂
The Kon-do(Golden Hall) built in the Momoyama period, enshrined the seated statue of the Tathagata Bhaisajyaguru (Yakushi) that is the main object of worship and the bodhisattvas Nikko (Suryaprabha) and Gakko (Candraprabha) on either side thereof.
桃山時代に建てられた金堂には、本尊の薬師如来坐像、両脇には日光・月光菩薩像が安置されています。
The Lecture Hall 講堂
There are 21 Buddha statues enshrined in the Lecture Hall. This is three-dimensional mandala that expresses Kobo-Taish’s esoteric teachings.
講堂には21体の仏像が安置されています。これは、弘法大師の密教の教えを表現する立体曼荼羅です。
The Kobo Ichi market 弘法さん
The 21st of each month is the day of the temple fair known as the Kobo Ichi market. Here, as many as 1000 outdoor stalls selling daily necessities or antiques and curiosities are set up within the temple precincts; a lively and bustling sight.
毎月21日の縁日は弘法市と呼ばれ、境内に日用品や骨董品の露店が1000軒も並び、賑わいを見せます。
