What is Sumo? 相撲って何だろう

Sumo is traditional Japanese wrestling and is considered Japan`s national sport. It ordinated as a way to tell fortune in ancient times, and developed into a spectator sport in Edo period. Today, professional sumo holds six grand tournaments a year, with each lasting 15 days.

相撲は伝統的な日本式のレスリングで、日本の国技となっています。相撲は古代に吉凶を占う方法として発祥し、江戸時代には観戦スポーツとして発展しました。今日ではプロの相撲は、年六回の本場所を開催しており、それぞれ15日間続きます。

How is sumo different from Mongolian wrestling? 相撲はモンゴル相撲とどう違うの

Sumo developed from Shinto rituals, so it has more ritualistic features than Mongolian wrestling. For example, the wrestler stomp their feet on the ring. It is a ritual to ward off evil. They also throw salt onto the ring before a bout. It is a ritual to purify the ring.

相撲は神道の儀式から発達したので、モンゴル相撲に比べると儀式的な特徴が多いです。例えば、力士はしこを踏みますが、これは邪気を祓う儀式です。また取り組みの前に土俵に塩をまきますが、これは土俵を清める儀式です。

How is the winner of a sumo tournament decided ? 本場所の優勝者はどうやって決まるの

During the 15 days tournament, wrestler have one bout a day. The wrestler with most wins at the end becomes the winner of the tournament. When two or more wrestlers are tied for a tournament, play off matches are held. As a rule, wrestlers from the same stable do not fight each others, but playoffs are an exception. Wrestler`s ranks change according to the results of the tournament.

本場所の15日間、力士たちは毎日１試合を戦って、最後に勝ち星が一番多い力士が優勝します。２人以上の力士が同じ勝ち星で場所を終えた場合、優勝決定戦が行われます。原則として、同じ部屋の力士がお互いに戦うことはありませんが、優勝決定戦は例外です。本場所の成績によって力士の番付が変わります。

How are sumo wrestler ranked ? 力士はどのようにしてランク付けされるの

There are six divisions, and the top two divisions called makuuchi and juryo are a kind of major league and the lower four divisions are minor league. Wrestler in the major league are thought to be full-fledged wrestlers called sekitori. The highest rank of makuuchi is yokozuna, a grand champion, followed by ozeki, a champion, sekiwake, komusubi and maegashira. Once the wrestler is promoted to yokozuna, he is never demoted, so if he continues to lose matches, he has to retire.

全部で６階級あって、幕内と十両と呼ばれる上位２階級は上位リーグ、下位４階級は下位リーグです。上位リーグの力士は一人前とみなされ、関取と呼ばれています。幕内の最高位は横綱で、大関、関脇、小結、前頭と続きます。一度横綱に昇格すると降格することはありませんが、負けが続く様だと引退しなければなりません。
