Near Train stations or large intersections there is usually a small building called a koban, which is like a mini police station. If you look closely, you will see the policemen inside. Japan has a reputation for being the safest country in the world. The front line protecting this public order is the koban.

駅の近くや大きな交差点の近くに、交番と呼ばれる建物がありますが、それは小さな警察署です。よく見ると中に警察官がいるのが見えるでしょう。日本は世界一治安のよい国だという評判があります。その社会的秩序を守る最前線が交番なのです。

Nationwide there are approximately 6,300 koban. Two or three police officer do duty shifts at the koban. The term koban means [taking turns to stand guards]. The policemen who work here are called omawarisan, meaning [the men who patrol]. However their job is not just to go around the area on patrol, In fact they deal with all kinds of incidents. For example, they give direction, monitor traffic, and give guidance in the event of accidents. They even take care of drunks and meditate in quarrels. In addition, once or twice a year they visit every house and company in the areas. They keep a record of local family members and company employees. This is needed for confirmation of safety when disasters and other emergencies occur.

全国には約６３００の交番があります。そこには２～３人の警察官が当直勤務しています。交番とは「交代で番をする」という意味です。ここに勤める警察官は「お巡りさん」と呼ばれていて「巡回する人」という意味です。しかしながら、地域を巡回するだけではありません。実際にはさまざまなトラブルに対応しています。例えば道案内、交通の監視、事故の際の誘導などを行います。酔っぱらいの世話をしたり、喧嘩の仲裁もします。年に１～２回管轄区域の家や会社を回っています。家族構成や従業員の記録を残しています。災害に巻き込まれた際や緊急事態の際に、安否確認に必要なのです。
