What is Kana ? 仮名って何だろう？

Kana are phonetic characters used in the Japanese writing system. They were made from simplified kanji, or Chinese characters, which are ideograms. There are two types: hiragana and katakana. Hiragana are mainly used to supplement kanji, and katakana are mainly used to write loan word.

仮名は、日本の表記体系において用いられる表音文字です。仮名は、簡略化された漢字から作られました。漢字は表意文字です。仮名にはひらがなとカタカナの2種類があります。ひらがなは、主に漢字を補完するために用いられ、カタカナは主に外来語の表記に用いられます。

Kana are similar to an alphabet, aren`t they ? Can you write Japanese an alphabet, too ? 仮名ってアルファベットに似ていますね？日本語をアルファベットで書くことは出来ますか？

They are similar, but unlike alphabet letters, each kana represents a specific syllable in the Japanese language. Japanese syllable are simple, each consisting of either a vowel alone or a consonant plus a vowel. As Japanese has fewer vowels and consonants, it is easy to write in the Roman alphabet too.

似ています。ただしアルファベットの文字と違って、ひとつひとつの仮名は日本語における特定の音節を表します。日本語の音節は単純で、でれも母音だけか、もしくは子音プラス母音で出来ています。日本語は母音も子音も少ないので、ローマ字のアルファベットで表記するのは簡単です。

Why do the Japanese use several different sets of characters in writing ? どうして日本人は複数の異なる文字を使って日本語を書くのですか？

In the old days, the Japanese used Chinese for writing, and often read it based on the Japanese grammatical order while pronouncing kanji Chinese characters in either the Chinese or the Japanese ways depending on the context. Around the 10th century, they invented phonetic characters called kana to describe their own spoken language. still, they kept using kanji characters for conceptual words and set phrases. The result is a mix of kanji and kana characters.

昔日本人は日本語を書くのに中国語を使っていて、それを日本語文法の順番で読んで、文脈によって漢字を中国式（音読）か日本式（訓読）で読んでいました。10世紀ごろに、日本人は自分たちの話し言葉を表すための仮名と呼ばれる表音文字を発明しました。それでも概念を示す言葉や成句には漢字を使い続けました。その結果、漢字と仮名の共存が生まれました。

How many kana and kanji characters are there ? 漢字と仮名っていくつぐらいありますか？

Hiragana and katakana has 46 characters each. School children learn how to read and write them in the first grade at elementary school. Although there are said to be about 50,000 kanji used in Japan including names of people and places, the number of kanji designated for everyday use is 2,136 as of 2018. Japanese children have to learn about 1,000 kanji before graduating elementary school and the rest before graduating junior high school.

平仮名とカタカナは４６文字ずつです。学童は、小学校１年生の時に、それらの読み書きを習います。日本で使われている漢字は、人名・地名を含めて５万字ほどといわれていますが、2018年時点で常用漢字に指定されているのは2136字です。日本の子供は小学校を卒業するまでにおよそ千字、残りは中学校を卒業するまでに学ばなくてはなりません。
