インバウンド　神社　What are Jinja?

Jinja are Shinto shrines. They ensure Shinto deities. Each community has at least one shrine, and various Shinto rituals are held there, such as weddings, festivals, and rituals to pray for the growth of children. During the New Year, big shrines are very crowded with visitors.

神社は神道の神殿です。神社には神道の神が祀られています。各地域には、神社が少なくとも一つあり、そこでは結婚式や祭や子供の成長を願う儀式など、様々な儀式が行われています。正月には、大きな神社は参詣者でとても混み合います。

インバウンド　神社　Are Jinja similar to Western churches ?

Both Jinja and churches function as a community center , where community people build their ties. But Shinto has no founder, teachings or scriptures, so at jinja people simply pray for their wishes, and the priests help convey their wishes to the deities.

神社も教会も地域社会の中心としての役割を果たしていて、そこで地域の人々が絆を築きます。しかし、神道には教祖も教義も教典もないので、神社では単に願いのために祈り、神職はその願いを神に伝える手助けをします。

Shrine gates are called torii. They indicate the entrance to sacred space. Many shrines have several torii on the approach to the main hall. At Inari shrine, where deities of good harvests are enshrined, you may see numerous red torii standing close to each other, making a tunnel. They have been dedicated from the followers.

神社の門は鳥居と呼ばれていて、神聖な領域への入口を示しています。本堂に至る参道に複数の鳥居がある神社が多いです。豊作の神を祀る稲荷神社では、無数の鳥居がトンネルの様にびっしりと並んでいるのが見れるかもしれません。それらの鳥居は信者が奉納したものです。

インバウンド　神社　How do you pay respect at a shrine ?

At the entrance of shrine, there is usually a water basin. After purifying your hands and mouth there, walk on the approach to the main hall. Throw some coins into the offertory box in front of the hall, and ring the bell. Bow twice deeply , clap your hands twice, and pray for your wish. Bow deeply once again before you leave.

神社の入口には水鉢があります。そこで手と口を清めた後、参道を歩いて本堂まで行きます。本堂の前にある賽銭箱に小銭を投入れて、鈴から垂れ下がっている綱を揺らして鈴を鳴らします。二度深くお辞儀をして、二度拍手をして、願い事をして、去る前にもう一度深くお辞儀をします。

インバウンド　神社　Why do people visit shrine during the New Year ?

The Japanese have the idea that bad fortune goes away with the passing year, and everything becomes refreshed with the arrival of the New Year. Therefore, it is particularly important for them to visit shrines at the very beginning of a new year to pray for good fortune to come.

日本人には、旧年とともに悪い運が去って、新しい年の到来とともに全てが新しく生まれ変わるという発想がありました。それ故に新しい年の最初に神社にお参りして、幸運が訪れるように祈願することが大切です。
