When one wants to visit a sightseeing spot in Japan, public transportation 　 is very convenient. If it is a journey between two large cities, there is the famous Shinkansen bullet train. Once inside the cities, subways, trains, and buses are easy to use. There is just one thing to remember – be prepared for the rush hour in the morning and evening. Apart from that, Japanese public transportation system has an excellent reputation for punctuality and safety.

日本で観光地を訪れる際には公共交通機関の利用が便利です。２つの大都市の移動の旅であれば、有名な新幹線があります。ひとたび大都市に入れば、地下鉄、電車、バスが便利です。ただし一つだけ覚えておかなければならないことがあります。朝と夕方のラッシュアワーを覚悟しておいて下さい。それはさておき、日本の公共交通機関は、時間の正確さと安全性に定評があります。

A lot of people want to ride the Shinkansen. In spite of speeds exceeding 300kph, there is very little vibration or noise. The carriages are spotlessly clean and the trains run on time. Another convenience is the onboard sales of bento(lunch boxes), snacks, coffee and other goods. Staff push a food cart back and forth several times through the carriages.

新幹線に乗ってみたいという人はたくさんいます。時速３００ｋｍを超えるスピードにも拘わらず、揺れと騒音はほとんどありません。室内は染み一つなく清掃され、時間に正確に運行されています。もう一つ便利なことは、弁当、スナック、コーヒーなどの車内販売です。新幹線の販売員が食品ワゴンを押して、何度も車内を往復します。

One more thing you should aware of is the Shinkansen Cleaning Team. The length of time between arrival and departure of a Shinkansen tran at a terminal platform is about 12 minutes. If the passengers take five minutes to get and off, that leaves an interval of seven minutes. During these mere seven minutes it is the duty of the Cleaning Team to tidy up in all 16 carriages. With one person in charge of each carriages of 100 seats, they keep them in perfect condition. Many people are really impressed by this Japanese teamwork and cleanliness.

それからもう一つ新幹線で知って欲しいのは、清掃チームの存在です。プラットフォームに出入りする新幹線車両の平均的な滞在時間はおよそ１２分間です。乗客の乗り降りの時間を５分とすれば残り時間は７分です。このわずか７分の間に、１６両の列車を清掃するのが仕事です。一人当たり１車両１００席を担当して完璧な状態を保つようにするのが彼らの役目です。日本人のチームワークときれい好きに多くの人が感銘を受けます。
