The kimono is a traditional Japanese wide-sleeved robe. For women from overseas , wearing one is the most popular traditional culture experience. At prominent sightseeing spots it is possible to rent a kimono. Then you can stroll around the town wearing it. Likewise , a popular souvenir for foreign visitors is the casual summer kimono called yukata.

着物は袖の広い伝統的な日本のローブです。外国人女性にとって、着物を着ることは日本の伝統文化体験の中で最も人気があります。有名な観光地では着物をレンタルすることが可能です。着物を着て街を歩き回ることが出来ます。外国人観光客に人気があるお土産は「浴衣」と呼ばれるカジュアルな夏用の着物です。

Wearing a kimono in the correct manner is very difficult. Even among Japanese , most young people get help putting one on at a beauty parlor. Nowadays the kimono is divided into top and bottom parts. These are fastened together and a simple obi is attached. An obi is a decorative sash tied around the waist over the kimono.

着物を正式に着付けることは非常に難しいことです。日本人でも若い人の多くは美容院で着付けをしてもらっています。最近では着物を上下のパーツに分けたものがあります。これらを留めて簡単な帯をつけるのです。帯とは、着物の上で腰の周りに結ぶ幅広の装飾品です。

If you are not content with just the kimono , you can add accessories. Some carry pouches and foldable fans. Others carry wrapping cloths instead of handkerchiefs , or incense bags with their nice fragrances. Ornate hairpins and wooden clogs are also popular. In summer , the round fan called uchiwa is an indispensable item. Of course , the way to walk is important , too. You should walk unhurriedly , with short steps and toes pointed inwards.

着物だけでは物足りないという人は、アクセサリーを付け加えることもできます。袋物や扇子を持ち歩く人もいます。またハンカチの代わりに帛紗（ふくさ）や、良い香りのする匂い袋を持ち歩く人もいます。簪（かんざし）や下駄も人気があります。うちわと呼ばれる丸型の扇子も必須アイテムです。勿論、歩き方も重要です。歩幅を小さくした小股、爪先を内側に向けた内股でゆっくり歩く必要があります。

インバウンド　着物　Kimono 失敗しがちなこと　One Mistake with kimono

It is common for foreign visitors to make one mistake with their kimono. They fold the front of the kimono with the right side over the left. In Western-style clothing , women are accustomed to wearing the left side close to the body. This is called hidarimae. But for kimono , both men and women should wear it migimae , with the right side close to the body. Hidarimae is only used for dressing the dead at a funeral. For this reason , people say it is a bad omen and brings bad luck. In particular , when people are in financial difficulties , we say they are hidarimae.

外国人の肝の体験で失敗しがちなことが一つあります。着物を前で合わせる際に、右を左の上にしてしまうことです。洋服では、女性は左側を体により近い側として着ることに慣れています。これを左前と言います。着物は、男性も女性も、右前右側を体に近い方にして着なければなりません。左前はお葬式の際に、亡くなった人に着物を着せる時のみ用いられます。そのために悪い兆候であり、不幸をもたらすと言われています。人がお金に困ることを「左前になる」と言います。
