Kabuki is a form of traditional stage drama. Kabuki is performed only by men, so the female roles are played by male actors called onnagata. it is characterized by exaggerated makeup, gorgeous costumes, sophisticated stage sets, and a runway that extends into audience.

歌舞伎は伝統的な舞台演劇のひとつです。歌舞伎は男優のみが演じるため、女性役も女形と呼ばれる男優が演じます。歌舞伎の特徴は、派手な化粧、豪華な衣装、複雑な舞台装置、観客へ伸びる通路です。

Kabuki and Opera are a combination of drama, music and dance. However, while opera developed as a form of entertainment for high-class people, kabuki developed as popular entertainment. Also unlike in opera, kabuki musicians and singers often perform on the stage.

歌舞伎もオペラも演劇、音楽、舞踊を組み合わせている点においては似ています。しかしながらオペラが上流階級のための演劇として発達したのに対して、歌舞伎は大衆演劇でした。更に、オペラと違って、歌舞伎の演奏家や歌手たちはステージ上で演じることがよくあります。

Kabuki was begun as a dance performance by a shrine maiden named Izumo-no-Okuni in 1603. Soon similar performances by prostitutes became popular. The government worried about moral decline, and banned female stage performance. Ever since, it has been a tradition that kabuki is performed only by male actors. The actors who perform female roles are called onnagata. Kabuki uses a lot of exaggeration, and onnagata`s acting style is no exception. They try to exaggerate femininity with skill to look more feminine than real women.

歌舞伎は1603年に出雲阿国という名の巫女によって舞踊の演技として始められました。するとすぐに遊女たちによる似たような興業が人気になりました。政府はモラルの低下を懸念して女性の舞台上演を禁止しました。それ以来、歌舞伎は男優のみで演じられる様になりました。歌舞伎は誇張を多く使いますが、女性の演じ方も例外ではありません。女形は、巧みに女性らしさを誇張して、本物の女性よりも女性っぽくみせようとします。

Yago are kabuki actors stage family names. They were originally their shop names. In the old days, entertainers belonged to a low social rung, often living on the river side, but as kabuki actors influence on society increased, they became able to live on the main street by running a shop there. Today, yago are considered a symbol of their status. During kabuki performance, some audience s yell the actor`s yago at important scenes to boost the excitement.

屋号は、歌舞伎俳優一家の舞台での称号です。屋号はもともと彼らが営んでいたお店の名前です。昔は彼らの社会的地位は低く、河原に住むこともしばしばでした。歌舞伎役者の社会的影響力が増してくると、表通りにお店を構え、表通りに住むことも出来るようになりました。今では屋号は、彼らの地位の象徴だと思われています。歌舞伎の上演中に、大切な場面で雰囲気を盛り上げるために、屋号を叫ぶ観客がいたりします。
