インバウンド　柔道　What is Judo ?

Judo is a Japanese martial art. It is a form of unarmed combat between two contestants. Judo techniques include throwing and pinning. Judo was established by a Japanese educator Kano Jigoro, the founder of Kodokan, in the late 19th century. Judo has been an Olympic sport since 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

柔道は日本の武道のひとつです。二人の選手が武器を持たずに戦います。柔道の技には投げ技と固め技があります。柔道は日本の教育者で、講道館を創設した嘉納治五郎が19世紀末に確立しました。柔道は1964年の東京オリンピック以来、オリンピック競技になっています。

インバウンド　柔道 How is Judo different from Western wresting ?

Because Judo developed from the traditional Japanese martial art of jujitsu used by samurai, it emphasizes the importance of spiritual training and self-discipline. Although judo is an international sport today, it is still important show courtesy. In fact before and after the bout, the contestants bow to each other.

柔道は、武士が使っていた柔術という日本の伝統武術から発達したので、精神修養や自己鍛錬を重視します。今日では国際スポーツですが、今でも礼儀を示すことが大切です。実際、試合の前と後に、競技者はお互いにお辞儀をします。

インバウンド　柔道 Does Judo have weight divisions like wrestling ?

Yes it does. When male judo became an Olympic sport in 1964 at the time of Olympics, four weight divisions were introduced. Today, there are seven divisions for male and female judo respectively. Still, judo is based on the principle of ゛softness overcoming hardness ゛、so with proper skill, even a small contestant can throw a big opponent, taking advantage of the opponent`s weight and strength. It is another unique aspect of judo.

男子柔道がオリンピック競技になった1964年の東京オリンピックの時に、4階級が導入されました。今では、男子柔道、女子柔道それぞれに7階級あります。それでも柔道は、「柔よく剛を制する」という原理に基づいていて、正しい技能があれば、相手の体重や力を利用して、小さな人でも大きな人を投げることが出来ます。それが柔道のもうひとつの独特な一面です。

゛do゛ literally means ゛the way゛, and implies the way of self- discipline and good manners. Premodern Japanese martial arts used by samurai were reinvented into modern sports in the late 19th century as a tool of education to train not only physical strength but also mental strength. The word ゛do゛ represents such an ideal Samurai. ゛do゛ is used for other forms of art that teach self-discipline and good manners, such as kado. flower arrangement, and sado, the tea ceremony.

「道」の文字通りの意味は道で、自己鍛錬や礼儀作法の在り方を示します。武士が使っていた近世以前の武術は、19世紀末に、体力だけでなく精神面も鍛えるための教育手段として、近代的なスポーツに改変されました。「道」という言葉はこの理想を表しています。同じように、生け花を意味する華道や、茶の湯を意味する茶道など、自己鍛錬や礼儀作法を教える他の技能の分野でも、「道」が使われています。
